It all started when...

A few months ago I was driving in downtown Calgary doing some errands for a shoot and started picturing and playing with images in my head about a scientist obsessed with finding a meteor. Something about it stuck with me, and I replayed and developed the idea for a few weeks. But it wasn't until the day I remembered our friend, Kyla, had released an album that something clicked. I searched it up on Bandcamp and began listening through her songs. When Home Tree began playing, the images I had been playing with instantly came to mind and lined up immediately with the pace and feeling of the song. I presented the initial idea to a small team and the ball began rolling. Kyla was amped to be a part of it and right away jumped on board, not only as a performer and songwriter, but also with costumes and props for set dec. Our other friends, Krista and Dale Marushy flushed out details for story development and graphic design (Dale put all the newspaper articles together), and we set the ambitious goal of putting it all together within a few weeks! Our friend Amber hooked us up with an amazing artist, Andrea, who created the sculptures. My wife, Alysa, co-producer extraordinaire helped with overall planning, food prep, production assistance, and so much more! And my great pal Eric was eager to help as well and stepped in as a camera assistant for the cold days shooting in the mountains. And of course, Edith Marushy, in her debut film performance, put her five year old self completely into rehearsing for her part.

I cannot thank everyone involved enough and thank you, the reader and viewer, for giving our story your time.

KYLA FERRIER

Actor & Singer-Songwriter

KYLA FERRIER is a singer-songwriter/actor from the BC Coast. She enjoys writing for a broad range of genres. Recent music is best described as hopeful-melancholic rumination, concurrently base and astral. Synths, acoustic strains, bells, and bare vocals layer and build like questions on the brinks of answers. CBC Music’s Rich Terfry (Buck 65) has referred to Kyla’s sound as “ghostly beauty” and said of previously released song Is This, “…you really enjoy how the song is crafted, just the atmosphere of it, the feeling that it gives you when you listen to it. There’s a real haunting quality about it.” Newly featured track Home Tree follows suit, serving up more atmosphere and feels, connecting points for the tangible and the other-worldly. After this first time collaboration with Michael, Kyla is thrilled to have found a new creative kindred spirit, whose love for dystopian and sci-fi tales is matched with top-notch vision and execution skills! Hoping for many more opportunities to work with this fine filmmaker, and the rest of the team for that matter! Next up, acting in and musical composition for The CURIOSITY CABiNeT, an eerie, juicy play by Krista Marushy, premiering this coming August at The Calgary Fringe Festival. Follow Kyla on Facebook & Instagram to be in the know about new music releases and other projects.

I put you under the home tree, box above roots
With stars all around, and stars below
Waterfalls fall from boughs down
Centre, statue, ebony
Feeding the underground

You contemplate like a shepherd
I love you like a sheep
You contemplate like a shepherd
I love you like a sheep

I put me under the home tree, tethered and tired
Desperate and wired on hope
Many leaves all fall down
Covered, buried, sinking
Into the underground

Drowning in the starlight
Just shut up in the dirt
Drowning in the starlight
Just shut up in the dirt
